Shanghai Pudong International Airport
Located in Shanghai Pudong New Area, by the sea, Shanghai Pudong International Airport occupies an area of 32 sq.m., 30 km from the People's Square in downtown Shanghai. The first phase of the projict, with an investment of RMB 12 billion yuan, started on October 1997 and was completed at the end of 1999. The exterior of the main building looks like a giant sea gull, imparting a strong sense of the times and symbolic significance. Its 278,000 sq.m. floor space is three times that of the Hongqiao Airport. It is available for 36 planes to land at the same time. There are 13 luggage turntables, able to meet the needs of an annual 126,000 plane/times of loading and unloading. It has a yearly handling capacity of 20,000,000 person /times of passenger flow and 750,000-ton cargo transport. It can serve the taking off and landing of any types of the world's large planes.
The second phase of the project is targeted to complete in the year of 2005. It will consist of a 4,000-m runway, 800,000-sq.m. passenger lobby and 4 high-class south-north runways. The new airport once completed will handle an annual passenger volume of 70,000,000 person/times and a freight volume of 5,000 tons. It will lay a good foundation for Shanghai's development in the near century.
How to go there
Take Metro line 2 to Longyang Road, then shift to the first commercial maglev railway in the world, from Longyang Road subway station to Pudong International Airport. The 30 km trip takes 7 minutes and 21 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 431 km/h (267.8 miles per hour).
